What do you say?

ACTIVATE: But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. Matthew 15:18

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:21

ELEVATE: THE BLOGS ARE BACK! After taking a break for Christmas and New Years, we are excited to bring back the Be that Girl blog.  We are also bringing back the Be The Man blog, as we look to empower young people with what it means to be a biblical man and biblical woman.

This month, let’s focus on our words.  We ladies can talk! Can’t we?  I have literally stayed up all night doing nothing but talking with my best friends. The conversations never end!  Girls can talk for hours about literally anything and have the time of their lives.  But what do you say?  What words come out of our mouths?  There is much more to words than letters put together and sounds coming out of our mouths.  God created words and communication for a purpose.  Our words have power.

The Bible says a lot about the power of our words and how we are to use them.  Here are 3 things the Lord says about what flows out of our mouths.

  • Words give life:

You know that amazing feeling you have after someone brags on you or complements you in some way?  I love that feeling.  It immediately gives me confidence and puts me in the best mood.  This is because what we say has the power to bring life.  Life giving words build people up.  You can speak life though positivity and encouragement.  Shower the people around you with words that remind them of the goodness of our God!  Speaking life doesn’t just happen though.  We have to daily choose to speak kind words and not let our emotions take control of our tongues.

  • Words give death:

Sometimes we don’t think before we speak.  Instead, we can let our emotions get the best of us and we blurt out the first thing we feel when we get upset.  Negativity can flow out of our mouths when we let our emotions speak for us.  Words can pull people down.  Think about it.  Someone can say one negative thing towards you, about the way you look, the way you act, or a decision you made, and it can instantly bring you down.  Bullying, gossiping, and cursing are prime examples of speaking death.  Nothing good can ever come from negative words.  So steer away from them.  Choose to replace those word with life giving words!

  • Words flow from the heart:

What’s in your heart will come out of your mouth.  What you put in, is what will come out.  Always.  If you fill a glass up with water, Dr. Pepper won’t magically spill out of the glass.  You have water if you pour water.  It is incredibly important to fill yourself with positive thoughts and things of the Lord.  Be aware of what you are listening to and watching.  Who are the people speaking into your life and what are they filling you up with?  Make sure the things you are placing in your heart are the same things you want to flow out of your mouth.  In order to speak life, you have to fill up on life.

CULTIVATE: So, what do you say? What messages are you sending with the words you speak?  What is flowing out of your heart through the words you choose?  I challenge you to make a conscious decision to think before you speak.  Think about what you are saying and what it says about your heart.
