The Silence of Growth: Finding Rest

Activate– “Yes, my soul, finds rest in God; my hope comes from him.” Ps. 62:5

Elevate: Have you ever been looking forward to a movie and end up being disappointed that all the good parts were in the trailer? Well often we can look forward to sleep or vacation for rest and find ourselves disappointed. Honestly, because we are a three part being, mind, body and soul, there is nothing that can give complete rest apart from Him.

The enemy loves to distract us from spending time with God. He wants us to stay weary and disconnected so we do nothing fruitful. Yet, it’s so hard sometimes to value rest and consider it productive. We subconsciously ask ourselves, “how can stopping what I need to do actually be accomplishing more?” Jesus clearly taught us that He is the vine and we are the branch. Apart from Him we can do nothing. When we stop and begin to practice silence He comes in and blesses what we are doing. This isn’t where you’re totally quiet but where you quiet the distractions around you.

Prayer puts ourselves in a position to recognize God as our source. We spare ourselves so much time and effort when we become silent. He always has enough rest, strength, power, wisdom, peace, joy. You name it He is the source and He never runs out. Resting our soul in Him through prayer is the most productive thing we can do, because He provides it.

Cultivate: Find a silent place that you can spend 20 minutes in prayer. Pray about the heavy areas you might be dealing with and allow Him to give you rest.
