Activate: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matt 5:6
Elevate: I don’t know about you but do you ever feel like some Christians love to throw around the word “blessing.” It is true I want to be blessed, but there are times when those blessings are conditional. I do believe God wants to bless us. James clearly states how every good gift comes from the Father. The Bible also tells us that God is a good Father and wants to give good gifts to His children. As a father myself I love it when I can bless my children. While some blessings happen just because they are mine others happen because of the choices they make.
Jesus is showing us how to live blessed. Once we understand that He is the only one who can fill us, then a whole different life opens up to us. It is a blessing to have your sins forgiven. It is a blessing to be able to spend eternity in His presence. It is a blessing that we are redeemed by His blood, not by our good works. It is a blessing that He doesn’t leave us to figure out truth on our own.
Yet in the midst of all the blessings we receive upon salvation, it’s important to understand some blessings come because you are seeking Him. See, many times I want to bless my kids because of the work they put into something. It shows me their commitment to do what I’ve requested. In this passage it reveals a key to the Father’s heart. He wants us to want, need, have desperation for Him. When we seek Him in a genuine way we put our dependence on Him alone. In that dependence we find peace, joy, love, hope, fulfillment, wisdom, and the list goes on. Obviously we don’t depend on Him to be blessed, we depend on Him because we really do need Him. It’s just like a good Father to reward those who are diligent in seeking the only One who can satisfy our hunger and quench our thirst.
